I currently work as a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
I studied medicine in the Medical School of Athens, Greece, before pursuing specialist training in cardiothoracic surgery in the United Kingdom. I completed higher training in thoracic surgery in cardiothoracic centres of London and Leicester, including the hospitals of St George’s, Royal Brompton, Glenfield, and Harefield, where I was able to develop skills and specialist interests in bronchoscopic interventions, minimal access surgery, lung volume reduction techniques and surgical correction of chest wall deformities.
Motivated to engage with the wider field of science, I have completed postgraduate studies at PhD level in Nanomedicine by evaluating the application of cadmium selenide quantum dots in biomedical imaging and clinical diagnostics, for the detection of circulating cancer cells in human blood samples.
Following completion of training, I accomplished a fellowship in Robot-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (RATS) at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, where I also briefly practiced as a locum consultant, before moving on to my next role as a consultant thoracic surgeon at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, where I engaged with one of the country’s leading programmes in enhanced recovery after surgery.
I consider training courses an important learning tool for modern surgery; in addition to participating as a trainee and as a faculty member in various specialty related courses, I am the designer and organiser of an annual chest drain insertion course, which has been approved by the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK for 6 CPD credits.
I highly value the importance of clinical governance and research; I am routinely involved in a wide variety of clinical audits and research projects, the results of which have been presented in national and international meetings and published in peer reviewed journals. My participation in academic journals further comprises of peer reviews and editorial contributions.
I am a member of the Hellenic Cardio-Vascular & Thoracic Society of Surgeons (ΕΕΧΘΚΑ), the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland (SCTS) and the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS).
