Dr Periklis Perikleous

Short biography

Dr Periklis Perikleous is a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in London, with a specialist interest in minimally invasive and robotic thoracic surgery.

He completed his medical degree at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens before undertaking specialist cardiothoracic training in the United Kingdom. His higher surgical training took place at leading cardiothoracic centres including St George’s Hospital, the Royal Brompton Hospital, Glenfield Hospital and Harefield Hospital, where he developed expertise in bronchoscopic interventions, minimally invasive lung surgery, lung volume reduction procedures and the surgical treatment of chest wall deformities.

Dr Perikleous subsequently completed an advanced fellowship in robot-assisted thoracic surgery at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, gaining extensive experience in robotic techniques for lung and thoracic disease. He has now performed over 250 robotic thoracic procedures, reflecting significant experience in this rapidly evolving field. In November 2025, he led the team that performed the first thoracic surgical procedure using the da Vinci robotic system within the Spire Healthcare network, marking the launch of the robotic thoracic surgery programme for the group and expanding access to advanced minimally invasive thoracic surgery for private patients.

Following completion of his training and fellowship, Dr Perikleous was appointed Consultant Thoracic Surgeon at Bristol Royal Infirmary, where he worked within one of the country’s leading enhanced recovery after surgery programmes, before joining St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in London.

Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Perikleous has a strong academic background. He completed a PhD in Nanomedicine investigating the use of cadmium selenide quantum dots for biomedical imaging and the detection of circulating tumour cells in human blood samples. He remains actively involved in clinical research and is the Principal Investigator for the St George’s site of the RESTORE Trial, a multicentre randomised study evaluating whether surgery improves cardiopulmonary function and quality of life in patients with severe pectus excavatum.

Dr Perikleous has authored and co-authored multiple peer-reviewed scientific publications in the fields of thoracic surgery, nanomedicine and surgical innovation. His research has been presented at national and international meetings and published in scientific journals. He also serves as a reviewer for international peer-reviewed medical journals.

He is actively involved in medical education and training. Dr Perikleous organises and teaches on an annual Chest Drain Insertion Course accredited for continuing professional development (CPD) by the Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom. In addition, he serves as faculty on national cardiothoracic surgical training courses, contributing to the education and development of future cardiothoracic surgeons.

Dr Perikleous is a member of several professional societies including the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Great Britain and Ireland (SCTS), the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS) and the Hellenic Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons (ΕΕΧΘΚΑ).

Dr Perikleous is committed to providing evidence-based, patient-centred thoracic care, using advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques to optimise outcomes and recovery for his patients.
